Truth Be Told goes to university!

On Valentine’s Day, Truth Be Told spread love, knowledge, hope and wisdom beyond prison walls.

Executive Director Katie Ford and program graduate Dara Musick, who is a donor and volunteer for Truth Be Told since she left prison in November 2010, paid a visit to The University of Texas’ Michener Center for Writers. They spoke to students enrolled in a class called, “Literary Citizenship: Teaching Writing for Social Change.”

Through the eyes of a facilitator and program graduate, Katie and Dara shared their respective experiences of Truth Be Told’s Talk to Me program. They offered guidance and techniques on how to create safe space for reflection, personal writing and sharing stories. Dara opened the session by leading a community-building exercise, and Katie wrapped their time together with a storytelling activity she often does with the women at Lockhart Correctional.

Vive Griffith of the UT Michener Center wrote to Dara and Katie the following day, expressing her gratitude: “It was beautiful to witness how you all connected around the table, and I heard someone afterwards calling it ‘epic and profound,’ which I can only echo. You gave them many things to carry into their work in the world.”

Here’s to Truth Be Told and our ripple effect in the community!

Truth Be Told is participating in Amplify Austin Day (Feb 28-March 1, 2019) to raise $30k toward the $190k we incur every year to address a documented service gap for gender-responsive, trauma-sensitive programs in women’s correctional facilities.

Three great reasons to donate RIGHT NOW to our Amplify campaign:
(1) The first $8,500 will be matched dollar for dollar, thanks to Susan deGraffenried of Realty Austin, Team Sol Wilson Foundation and the Meyer Levy Fund. These entities will fulfill their pledges off-line directly to Truth Be Told once the campaign hits $8,500.
(2) All “early bird” donations made through our campaign page before Amplify Austin Day will benefit from Amplify’s “stretch fund.”
(3) The nonprofit that attracts the most early bird donations on their Amplify campaign page receives a $5,000 bonus! Help us claim that bonus!
